Delicious Baked Gujiya Recipe for Holi Festival Platter


Festivals are fun. We love them for unique celebrations and the spirit they possess. Well, the other reason is the yummy sweets and dessert. The fragrance of special sweetmeats preparing for Holi festival is already floating in the air. Foodies take it difficult to control their cravings for the delicious gujiyas and malpuas but what if they are equally worried about calories. This blog is dedicated to the gujiya recipe that a health-conscious foodie with a sweet tooth must try for Holi 2018.

Since we are aiming for a healthier version of these dumplings we try to reduce calories.

Ingredients for making crust:
Whole wheat flour          1 cup
Refined flour                    1 cup
Salt                                     a pinch
Water                                 as required (nearly ½ cup)
Clarified butter                 2 Tablespoon


Crust preparation is basic to the flaky sweet pastry. Bring all the dry ingredients together. Pour melted ghee on them and gently rub the ghee with flour, with the help of fingertips to a crumbling mixture. Add water to make a firm dough. Cover it with a damp cloth and keep it aside for 20-30 minutes.
Ingredients for stuffing vary from mawa to semolina to coconut and many others.

1. Mawa Gulkand Gujiya- The traditional gujiya recipe with mawa stuffing is all time favorite.

Mawa                            1/2 cup
Gulkand                         3 Tablespoon
Mixed Dry Fruits         1/3 cup
Cardamom Powder
Nutmeg Powder

Roast crumbled mawa on medium flame till golden pink color. The mawa will gather together when cooked. Turn off the stove and take out the mawa in a plate to cool down.
Add gulkand, dry fruits, and cardamom powder to the cool mawa.

2. Chocolate Gujiya-

This gujiya recipe is a new twist for chocolate lovers’ traditional Holi sweet. The sweet dumpling chocolate stuffing is prepared in two ways.

Mawa                                     1 cup
Powdered brown Sugar     1/3 cup
Chocolate chips                    1/2 cup
Cinnamon Powder               a pinch

dry-roasting-mawa-gujiya-recipeRoast crumbled mawa till nice golden brown. Cool the roasted mawa in the plate completely. Add powdered brown sugar, Chocolate chips, and Cinnamon Powder to it.

II. Ingredients for chocolate gujiya recipe:

Mawa                                       1 cup
Powdered Brown Sugar        1/3 cup
Melted Dark Chocolate          1/2 cup
Mixed Dry Fruits (Roasted)   1/3 cup

Add powdered brown sugar, chocolate, and dry fruits to the roasted cool mawa.

Assembling gujiya:

  • Make 10 equal size small balls from the dough.
  • Flatten the balls and roll out in 4-inch circles.
  • Place the flour circle on the gujiya mold.
  • To seal apply water around the circumference with a fingertip.
  • Place 1 to 1.5 tsp filling in the centre.
  • Fold the mold so that the circle is folded from middle and both the ends come together.
  • Gently press them to stick, refine the edges with pizza cutter or cut & fold.
  • Prepare all the gujiyas same way. Cover them with a moist cloth to prevent it from drying.

Healthy baked gujiya recipe

  • Sweet dumplings are generally deep fried in ghee but this perfect gujiya recipe is baked.
  • Line the baking tray with parchment paper. Spray oil on it for a thin coating.
  • Preheat the oven to 180 degree Celsius.
  • Place the gujiyas on the baking tray. Brush them with pure ghee and bake for 25 minutes at 180-degree centigrade.

Finish the recipe with a drizzle of honey or melted chocolate over gujiyas.
